On April 10, Türkiye Sustainable Aviation Alliance (TSAA) held its Review Meeting, generously hosted by SOCAR Türkiye, to share ongoing efforts toward the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Roadmap.
The meeting began with a welcoming speech from Mehmet Özenbaş, Group Director of Corporate Sustainability at SOCAR Türkiye, and opening remarks by Prof. Hülya Cebeci, the Director of TSAA.
The first session of the Review Meeting, held under the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Roadmap and titled “Türkiye’s SAF Landscape – Demand Side Analysis,” focused on the current status of Türkiye’s aviation sector, including CO₂ emissions and projected fuel demand, as well as scenarios for SAF demand in Türkiye. Yaşar Yetişkin, Senior Sustainable Aviation Manager at ICF, and Dr. Kaan Yıldız, Senior Researcher at TSAA, shared the analyses and findings from their recent work.
Deniz Daştan, Corporate Sustainability Management Manager at Turkish Airlines, and Ali Uzun, General Counsel & Director of Sustainability at Pegasus Airlines, provided evaluations of the sector’s growth, advancements in aircraft technologies, and the impact of fleet renewal strategies on emissions—also highlighting their institutions’ perspectives on SAF adoption.
The second session of the Review Meeting, organized under the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Roadmap and titled “SAF Feedstock Potential, Production Technologies, and Scaling Strategies,” focused on the evaluation of potential feedstocks for SAF production in Türkiye, a technical review of current feedstock analyses and proposed SAF production pathways, and a discussion on potential facility locations and capacity analyses. During the session, Yaşar Yetişkin, Senior Sustainable Aviation Manager at ICF, and Dr. Alptekin Yıldız, Senior Researcher at TSAA, shared their analyses on the session themes.
Selcen Temel Topallar, Head of Strategy and Business Development at TÜPRAŞ; Erdem Ünlüer, Corporate Strategy and Development Group Director at SOCAR Türkiye; and Dr. Pınar Kezer Kılınç, Corporate Communications and Sustainability Executive at DB Tarımsal Enerji, shared their institutions’ perspectives on feedstock potential and production technologies.
The third session of the Review Meeting, held under the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Roadmap and titled “Policy Landscape and Regulatory Frameworks: Strategic Insights and Recommendations with Incentives Discussions,” focused on policy frameworks and regulatory mechanisms designed to support SAF production, alongside a review of incentive models informed by international best practices. Yaşar Yetişkin, Senior Sustainable Aviation Manager at ICF, and Dr. İpek Ösken, Administrative Coordinator at the Türkiye Sustainable Aviation Alliance (TSAA), presented the ongoing efforts being carried out under the roadmap.
Andrew J. Sweeney, Regional Leader for Sustainable Aerospace (Middle East, Türkiye, Africa, and Central Asia) at Boeing; Sergejs Balonuškovs, Senior Manager for External Affairs and Sustainability (Europe) at IATA; and Ahmet Berkan Korkmaz, Environmental Unit Coordinator at the Directorate General of Civil Aviation of Türkiye, shared their institutions’ perspectives on both national and international policy developments.
The meeting concluded with closing remarks from Elchin İbadov, CEO of SOCAR Türkiye.
